Getting my act together.

7 09 2009

Happy Labor Day, everyone. I think I have to start realizing that the charm of the summer time is permission to blow off some of the every day stuff in favor of long weekend at the beach and hanging out with people visiting from out of town. Or at least that seems to be my M.O.

While I have some stuff coming in the fall (ND/MSU game, home over Columbus Day weekend, long weekend in Lurray for Beth’s birthday), I feel like I’m regaining the life that I seemed to have chucked out the window last May. It’ll be nice to get back to business as it were in terms of my working out and seeing certain friends.

I’ve finally been able to blow the metaphoric stink off myself and feel like I’m caught up on some life goals. Among other things, I’ve signed up for the Marine Corps Marathon 10k (again), have been making advances on certain professional type things, and finally figured out the Post-Bar-a-palooza.

More on that, later. I’ll be curious to see how my little count down turned out.

So many of my nerd interests are somewhat depressing when you get down to it. Human trafficking is probably the most depressing. With that, enjoy:

“Child prostitutes rescued in US”

US authorities have rescued nearly 50 child prostitutes – some as young as 13 – in a nationwide operation against the trafficking of children for sex.

More than 570 suspects were arrested during the action, which took place over three nights.

FBI agents and local police forces were involved in the operations which spanned some 29 cities.

Officials say a 16-year-old girl who recruits children as prostitutes is being sought as a priority.

Special Agent Melissa Morrow, of Washington’s FBI, said adult prostitutes who were among those arrested tipped authorities off about the girl.

“She is currently 16 and started when she was 13,” Agent Morrow said.

“Now she is out there recruiting other juveniles as well,” she said, adding that finding her was “at the top of our list”, the Associated Press news agency reported.

Cycle of violence

The ages of teenage prostitutes rescued in Operation Cross Country III ranged from 13 to 17.

The FBI said 571 suspects were arrested on suspicion of the trafficking children for prostitution and solicitation.

“We continue to pursue those who exploit our nation’s children,” said FBI Director Robert S Mueller III.

“We may not be able to return their innocence but we can remove them from this cycle of abuse and violence.”

Technically challenged… or am I

10 02 2009

I’m trying to get better at updating this.  I have it stuck in my head that this thing needs to be ‘perfect’ before I really tell people I’m doing this.  So basically this whole post is my attempt to embed a photo (and maybe down the road) a video into the post.

The Devereaux

Woo hoo!  Victory is mine.  Sweet, sweet triumph.  Why was that so hard?  Now to conquer the whole blogroll/cloud tag/widget situation that I’m frustrated with.  The problem with this is that I’m not technically disinclined, but I’m not a graphic designer either.  The project, she continues…

“Nerd” would be putting it politely.

Allow me to set the scene:

It’s Sunday morning.  I’ve been up for a couple hours but entirely too lazy to do anything too terribly productive.  Unless you count brewing tea, that is.  I’m playing with the interwebs to read new blog postings, news, check facebook et al.  I definitely found the text of the H.R. 1 that was published last night (aka the stimulus package we’ve been hearing about for months).  ‘Meet the Press’ comes on in a few minutes.  I’m in my happy place.

I like it when I get still get geeked up over some policy initiative.  It reaffirms that I’m exactly where I should be.  It probably reaffirms that I am completely unhinged, but you can’t win them all…

(I owe a few posts here to recap the  rest of the inauguration hoopla as well as some other things that have been bumping around in my head.  For now, I kinda want to see if I can’t cat nap while I listen to House Majority Leader John Boehner (R-OH)).
